They received the Community Traffic Safety Hero Gold Award on behalf of the Department.
We received this award in recognition of our continued commitment to making our streets safer through education, enforcement, and community engagement.

SSgt. Honora Sullivan-Chin received a Special Recognition Award at the annual Spirit of MAWLE Awards Ceremony on June 22, 2023.  SSgt. Sullivan-Chin was recognized for her work as NPD’s Mental Health Liaison Supervisor, where she collaborates with our clinical co-responders.  She has served thoughtfully and with dedication in this challenging role.  She was also recognized for her work as NPD’s Supervisor of our Community Liaison Officers.  SSgt. Sullivan-Chin united a group of compassionate and dedicated employees and has instilled a sense of teamwork into the group. With her guidance, Community Liaison Officers have been heavily involved in community outreach efforts.  SSgt. Sullivan-Chin has done all this while also serving as a patrol supervisor on the overnight shift and while earning her second master’s degree.

On January 12, 2022 Northampton Public Safety received a call for a man in cardiac arrest on the ice of the twin ponds in the Meadows Area of the city.  Dispatcher Lisa Day did an excellent job of keeping the son in law of the victim calm and focused and gave him instructions on how to perform CPR.  Officer Kohl responded to the scene and located the men on the ice, which was unstable and cracking under his feet.  He was able to pull the victim to shore, determine that the victim had no pulse and performed CPR, until NFR arrived and took over medical care.  The victim was eventually transported to Baystate Medical Center and ultimately listed in stable condition.  For his actions, Officer Kohl was awarded the Exceptional Duty Medal.

Last year NPD was invited to send an officer to be part of a free pilot program at William James College that pairs police officers with mental health co-responders. Officer Wallace volunteered to attend and on Sunday, May 21, he received a Graduate Certificate in Crisis Response and Behavioral Health along with eleven other members of the class.
William James College describes the program as follows: The first-of-its kind credentialing tool for arrest diversion, offering cutting-edge education and training for law enforcement and mental health clinicians working in partnership. The program helps guide police and clinicians to defuse situations before force is needed and provides intensive, skills-based coaching on responding to dynamic, complex, and evolving situations.

April 2, 2023:  The Mass Career Technical Education 2023 “Friends of CTE” Annual Award, the Northampton Police Department

Members of the Northampton Police Department, along with members of Northampton Fire Rescue, are honored to have received the Mass Career Technical Education 2023 “Friends of CTE” annual award. Chief Kasper and Captain Caputo with NPD, and Assistant Chief Andy Pelis and Mechanic Jeff Bates with NFR, received the award at the Mass CTE Awards Banquet on April 1st in Foxborough.
NPD was recognized for our strong support of the Automotive Technology and Criminal Justice programs at SVAHS. We contract with the Automotive Department to have our cruisers serviced by students at the school. We also love working with students and staff in the Criminal Justice program. Members of our Detective Bureau and Patrol Division have volunteered to teach booking procedures, mock crime scenes, scenario-based training, and many other topics. Captain Caputo also sits on the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee.

June 14, 2022:  MADD OUI Enforcement Award, Officer Heather Longley
Officer Heather Longley was presented with an achievement award for Operating Under the Influence (OUI) Enforcement by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Officer Longley was presented with this award along with 22 other officers and troopers from across the State of Massachusetts who have shown outstanding service in OUI enforcement in 2021. The awards were presented by survivors and loved ones of those killed by drunk drivers.
